Dent Removal: How Do Mechanics Remove Dents from Cars?

If you’ve dented your car, you might have tried getting it out yourself with a DIY kit. The trouble is, if the dent is in an awkward place or deep enough, these are usually pretty useless. If you’re thinking about getting a quote for dent removal here at Carworx Solihull and wonder how we do it, this post will show you the professional process.

Clean up the dent

Dents usually have a lot of scrapes, scratches, and chipped paint. So first, we’ll clean all this up to see the extent of the damage we’re looking at. Once we can see the dent clearly, we’ll decide the best course of action on how to remove it. This will depend on the size, placement, and severity of the damage.

Some of the things we take into account when working on dental removal are:

  • How badly kinked the dent is. If the dent kinks or bends at more than a 90-degree angle, you’ll probably need a replacement part.
  • How long it will take to get the dent out. If it’s going to cost a lot in labour time, we might suggest a replacement part to save costs.
  • If the part can be replaced. Sometimes we can’t source a new panel or it’s an old classic car, so we have no choice but to work the dent out.

Techniques we use for dent removal

There are a couple of different methods we can use to pull a dent out. Which one we use will depend on your car, but our technicians always know which will probably work best from the look of the damage:

Hammer and Dolly

A dolly is a chunk of metal that we brace the car with to support it while we hammer out the dent. This works best on small or shallow dents. Once hammered out, we’ll fix the paintwork to make it look new.

Stud Welder

This is a tool that welds studs into the dent. We can then use stud pliers to pull the studs and drag the dent back into place. The studs are removed once the panel is back in place and the panel is made right.

Dent Puller

This is an industrial suction cup we can adhere to the dent and pull it back into place. This won’t work on severe dents but is a quick and easy fix for light dents.

Whatever method we use to get rid of the dent, we then use high-quality filler to restore the surface of the car and re-spray and areas to make the area look flawless.
